Shanghai is a diverse metropolis with a unique charm that you can hardly find in other cities. The famous Huangpu River is lined with a gallery of beautiful architecture, known as the Bund, beckoning to curious visitors and smart locals alike. Erected throughout time to follow varying styles such as Gothic, Romanesque, or Baroque, these historic buildings stand magnificently and harmoniously. Additionally, evident at a distance, the soaring modern art-deco Jin Mao Tower rises up in bustling Lujiazui, Shanghai’s business hub, in Pudong district.
Located in the 53rd to 87th floors of the iconic Jin Mao Tower, Grand Hyatt Shanghai is the perfect place to view the entirety of the Bund while experiencing the future of Lujiazui. In this issue, we’ve had the great privilege of interviewing Mr. Anthony Ha, General Manager of Grand Hyatt Shanghai and Area Vice President. We’ve learned more about this classic and charming hotel as well as the history of the city.
Featuring a total of 548 deluxe guestrooms and suites, Grand Hyatt Shanghai remains a landmark destination in Shanghai’s business hub, Lujiazui. It’s within a 5-minute drive to Shanghai International Convention Center, 10-minute drive to Riverside Promenade and the Bund, and 40-minute drive to Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport. Since its opening in 1999, Grand Hyatt Shanghai has developed swiftly by virtue of its superior geographical location and witnessed the rapid advancement of Pudong district as an industrial pioneer. So far, the hotel has gone through numerous momentous moments and grown into an international business and leisure hotel which pays great attention to quality and service.
Running such an amazing hotel could be a challenge, even for hotel managers with outstanding capabilities and experience. Anthony is undoubtedly one in a million. After graduating from Washington State University with a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management, he started his career by assuming a management position in the Front Office of Hyatt Regency San Francisco in 1985 and joining Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport in 1986, followed by a post in Grand Hyatt Macau Hotel. Later on, Anthony worked in various positions in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and the Micronesia Islands. In February 2011, he went back to Hyatt Hotels Corporations and served as General Manager of Hyatt Regency Qingdao and Hyatt Regency Suzhou, and Area Vice President. Boasting more than 20 years of experience in hotel management, Anthony is confident about the management of Grand Hyatt Shanghai.
As General Manager of Grand Hyatt Shanghai and Area Vice President, Anthony adheres to quality service as the foundation to the hotel brand. From his perspective, running a hotel is not all about profit; it is also about culture, quality, and value. He finds great pleasure in communicating with guests with different backgrounds and countries. He believes that he must understand the guests’ needs in order to improve the hotel’s service and create a home away from home. Anthony told us that they have renovated part of Grand Hyatt Shanghai, including the Ballroom, Grand Club, and Diplomat Suite, with the aim of providing guests with an even better living experience and elevating the hotel’s service quality.
In relation to hotel culture and personal values, Anthony holds in esteem the sustainable development philosophy - an economic growth model about long-term development and meeting the needs of modern people without sacrificing the resources of future generations. According to Anthony, sustainable development philosophy can not only promote the development of the economy, but also protect the natural environment so that current and future generations can have beneficial lives and work in peace.
Anthony also applies the sustainable development philosophy into the hotel’s catering management. Ten restaurants and bars, - including ON56, Canton, Club Jin Mao, Patio and Piano Bar in Grand Hyatt Shanghai - offer specialties and delicacies from all over the world. Mostly adopting open kitchens, these restaurants and bars have brought brand new trends to the local catering by displaying unique features, including fresh ingredients and vivid live performances. What’s more, these restaurants combine local cultural elements and cooperate with reliable and green suppliers, so as to cater to the various needs of different gourmets, fulfill a responsibility to society, and show that they care for people so they can be their best selves – part of the service concept of the Hyatt brand.
Guided by such a strong sense of social responsibility, Grand Hyatt Shanghai will launch the Alaska Seafood Festival this September, further implementing the sustainable development philosophy. All selected seafood will be sustainable, satisfying the appetite of most guests while sharing the philosophy to the public without affecting the ecosystem’s natural cycles. It’s Anthony and his team’s highest hopes that sustainable development philosophy can make the event, not just the cuisine, more meaningful.
In the end, Anthony also expressed his great confidence towards the hotel’s future development. Grand Hyatt Shanghai, with the help of partners, will upgrade and optimize its products and services and continue to explore and develop catering and room products. Rather than just enhancing its performance, the hotel’s current goal is to enhance intangible assets such as hotel culture and philosophy through quality improvement. It is expected that after witnessing the rapid development of Pudong District, Grand Hyatt Shanghai will keep upgrading itself into one of the most unique and classic hotels in the city.
